A New Beginning (2 min read)

It was the new year’s eve. Just a couple of minutes to 12. The streets were teeming with youngsters – awaiting the final countdown, deciding on their resolutions, typing new-year wishes on their mobiles with faces as bright as the street lights.

And then there was me, a girl yet to figure out why it was a big deal. Was everything supposed to change in just one second? Definitely not. I sighed. People love to live a life full of illusions…they hide their true emotions behind the pretence of excitement…and what for? For the hope of a new beginning…only to realize later that a beginning always comes with an ending. And the pain of the ending stays with you forever…even after a thousand new beginnings.

The countdown had started. I shut the window. The shouting and screaming had started to get on my nerves. My phone rang. It was Mom. I answered on the last ring.

‘Tell me quickly, Mom.’ I said, trying to sound busy.

Silence followed.

‘What did you call me for?’ I repeated in an irritated tone.

‘Just wanted to ask you…,’ She paused and added, ‘are you okay?’

My eyes swept around the empty apartment. Tears welled up. I opened my mouth but words stuck in my throat. ‘Yeah…I am.’ I lied. It had become routine.

‘How are you, Mom?’ I spluttered. I had hardly ever asked her that before. Why had I not? Not that I didn’t care. I always felt the twinge of this emotional barrier that had formed between us. But I got accustomed to the pain.

I opened the window as we talked. I stuck my head out and watched the fireworks up in the sky. For reasons unknown, I smiled too. ‘Happy New Year, Mom.’ I said.

Some new beginnings come with just happiness. And they last forever…
